Ice Cream

Date: Thursday September 18th, 2008
Today I am starting my week of "fasting" by going without eating ice cream. I picked ice cream because it is one of my favorite treats, and I wanted to give up something that would be challenging for me. I used the extra time (when I would be enjoying my ice cream for the day) to catch up on my reading for "The Amazing Bible Race." Today's Bible reading was Luke 23, the story of Christ's crucifixion. If Jesus can give up His life for me, I know that I can give up ice cream for a week to spend more time with Him.
September 19, 2008 (second day of fasting)
No ice cream today! I have been very busy picking up branches, sweeping, and mowing to clean up after the storm. I did get a craving for a Frosty when I went through Wendy's drive-through. I focused on saying a prayer of thanks that there were no serious damages done to my house and that my friends and family were all safe. The empty tomb is proof that Jesus lives! (Luke 24).
September 20, 2008 (third day)
What a beautiful day! The weather is just about perfect. I must be patient, so that my week without ice cream will soon be over. God, be with me this day and help me to reach my goal.
September 21, 2008 (fourth day)
I am excited about starting to read the Gospel of John tomorrow. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Thank you, God, for creating me. Help me to live my life for you.
September 22, 2008 (fifth day)
Jesus is the "Light of my World." Rough times cannot overcome this light.
September 23, 2008 (sixth day)
Great! An easy Amazing Bible Race quiz today. It was fun matching up the creative names for Jesus with the Bible verses. I learned alot about how Jesus described himself in the scriptures.
September 24, 2008 (seventh and last day)
I have NOT mentioned ice cream for the last several days, as you may have noticed. I have almost forgotten about my craving for it. I am planning to have ice cream as a once a week treat from now on. With God's help, I know that I will be able to follow this plan.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "I Have a Dream Speech"

Date: Tuesday July 15th, 2008
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28, 1963. In this speech, he spoke of his wish that black and white people could become equal and live together without conflicts.
In the speech, he quoted Amos 5:4 "But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream."
He also quoted Isaiah 40:4
"Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low" when he stated that "every valley shall be exalted." I feel that Dr. King is saying that even though times can be tough, there is always hope that the "dark valleys" can be conquered, and "the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together." These words still hold true today, forty-five years later.
